Tall Buildings

Tall buildings are mementoes of human history and technological development. The pyramids, temples, church spires and skyscrapers are all symbols: symbols of the power of the settlement they were built in or the person who had them built.

Currently the tallest building
in the world is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, with its height
of 829.8 metres.
It is so tall that you can observe the sunset at different times from floors at different heights.

The Great Pyramid of Giza

When the Great Pyramid of Giza was built, it was 147 meters tall, making it the tallest structure humans had ever built.
It held the title for
more than 3,500 years, until the 14th century.

Lincoln Cathedral in England, for example,
was as tall as 160m in 1311, when the restoration of
its spire was completed. Later, the height of churches, towers and cathedrals continued to increase to become the tallest buildings or structures of their time.

The next important record holder was the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The tower
was slightly over 300 metres tall when it was completed in 1889. It was
the tallest structure in the world for about 40 years, until the Chrysler Building was completed. This new record was surpassed less than a year later,
when another New York landmark, the Empire State Building,
was built at a height of 443 m.

The race isn’t over yet. The latest creation of the team responsible
for the design and construction of the Burj Khalifa is the Jeddah Tower in neighbouring Saudi Arabia, which is planned to be the first skyscraper to reach the 1 kilometre height. Its expected date of completion is 2021.

Radio towers

In the 1940s, however, radio towers began to be erected. These towers surpassed the height of residential buildings of the time. Until 2010, the record-holder for the title of tallest structure in the world was the KVLY-TV mast, a 630 m radio mast in the US.
