The pyramids of Giza are the most famous of the Wonders of the Ancient World. This group of pyramids, located near Cairo, the present-day capital of Egypt, were built in the 26th century BC, in the Egyptian Old Kingdom. The three pyramids were designed for Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure.


The Pyramids of Giza are the only one of the Ancient wonders
still intact.

Harbour

Some of the building material for the construction of these monumental structures was transported to the site
by boat.

Builders’ quarters

It is believed that there were up to one hundred thousand labourers at a time working on their construction.

Pyramid of Khafre

The second largest of the three pyramids. The original height was approximately 143 metres, the sides of the square base measured about 215 metres in length.

The Great Pyramid

The largest of the pyramids of Giza was designed for Pharaoh Khufu. Its original height was 147 metres, while the base sides measured 230 metres.

Pyramid of Menkaure

The smallest of the three pyramids of Giza.
Its original height was
66 metres, and the base length was 103 metres.

The Sphynx, Guardian of the Necropolis

The 73-metre-long
and 20-metre-tall Sphinx was probably made during
the reign of Khafre.

The Pyramids of Giza

The Necropolis

Besides the three large pyramids, there are several smaller pyramids, temples, mastabas and other buildings in the Necropolis connected to their construction and the Cult of the Dead.

Valley temple

The Valley Temples were connected to the central buildings of the Necropolis by a passage.
